Designer:
Tias Eckhoff
Norwegian Tias Eckhoff is renowned as being a versatile designer who contributed heavily to the Scandinavian Design movement. Graduating from the College of Applied Arts and Crafts with a degree in ceramic arts in 1945, he designed his first cutlery pattern for Norstaal, in 1962. "Maya", on request from Finn Henriksen, then owner and founder of Norstaal, was a huge success. Its more recent sister-pattern is a modern take on a Scandinavian classic.
Una, inspired by Bauhaus and designed by Tias Eckhoff in 1973, has been awarded Royal status by the Norwegian crown. A complete set of Una was given as a gift to the Norwegian Prince on his wedding day in 2001 and the pattern is also displayed permanently in the Design museum in London. The cutlery itself is slender yet exhibits heavy round curves. Its form harmonises from top to bottom with drop-shaped handles and rounded heads to facilitate a comfortable and stable grip.
